If I Were a Tree, By Brenda Bunting
If I were a tree I would hold the wind in my branches
Listen to the sounds of children's laughter
Hear the pulse beat of earth
Drink from the purest rivers deep underground
Absorb all unknown pain and hurt. If I were a tree I would speak to the sun
in languages ancient that few know and fewer hear I would move in a way uncommon
although to others I just appear to be standing still I would reach out to the sky and dance with the clouds be tickled by every creature moving upon me open burrowing space and provide the safest home
for those who want to coexist inside me
